Phytophtora infestans is a devastating disease that can sometimes destroy a crop within 7 to 10 days, if the weather conditions are right (stormy, rain, cool nights). The leaves turn black which means the plant and its fruits are unable to obtain food. The tomatoes then develop fungus which is overrun by mildew, making them unsuitable for processing.
This disease presents a real challenge for growers, making it difficult to produce a good crop. As a preventative measure, the farmer regularly treats his crops; however, depending on the weather conditions, (humid and cool), this treatment is not always enough; and sometimes it's impossible to apply particularly in damp conditions when the tractor is unable to access the land. In addition, tomato producers today do not have active curative treatments and can only use active preventative agents. The resistance (intermediate level resistance) of the Kendras variety is an essential way of controlling the development of this disease and obtaining a healthy crop to produce high quality industrial tomatoes.
