The intelligence of mechanical weeding is now available with the ULLMANA hoe, launched in France in early 2024 through commercial representation by TERRATECK.
This innovative tool operates using a combination of advanced technologies, enabling precise weeding within rows across a wide range of crops and plant spacings. It relies on an intelligent system capable of storing and analysing an infinite number of real-time images captured during use.
General Operation
• Automatic camera guidance:
The ULLMANA hoe is equipped with high-resolution cameras that film crop rows in real time. These cameras are connected to an onboard computer system that analyses the images, allowing the machine to distinguish weeds from cultivated plants, even when they are in close proximity.
The hoe’s software uses computer vision algorithms (deep learning) to identify specific crop characteristics and differentiate them from weeds. The cameras also control forward speed, the working depth of the hoe blades, and the machine’s lateral movement to ensure precise alignment with crop rows.
• Control of hoe blades:
Once the computer system identifies the plants to preserve, the hoe blades are precisely activated using pneumatic actuators to cut weeds without damaging the cultivated plants. These blades work the soil in a highly localised manner, avoiding the plants’ roots.
• Efficiency and speed:
The machine operates at high speeds of up to 10 km/h, depending on the spacing between plants. Thanks to cutting-edge technologies and mechanical components, it can weed up to 30–40 hectares per day, depending on the crop type and soil conditions.
• Ease of use:
The machine is easy to connect to a tractor using a standard three-point hitch. Additionally, it does not require a permanent internet connection or GPS guidance, making it operable in diverse conditions without relying on specific technologies.
